Belize Peace Movement responds to joint release issued by US, EU, and UK

By BBN Staff:The Belize Peace Movement (BPM) said yesterday that the joint release issued by the United States, United Kingdom, and European Union in regards to the postponement of the ICJ referendum, did nothing to address major issues surrounding the exercise.

The BPM said that the issues such as the education campaign which was biased towards achieving a”Yes” vote, the difficulties that the Vital

Statistics Unit has been having with regards to producing accurate and timely voter registration cards, the parameters set for Voter Re-registration, the issue of the eligibility of naturalized Guatemalans and the blatant lack of accountability of funds granted to the GOB by the very same Friends of Belize,  are all issues that remain unaddressed as the Government of Belize (GOB) seeks a new referendum date.

“These are but a few, of many, critical elements which characterize the current state of affairs, the Friends of Belize conveniently neglected to acknowledge,” the BMP said. The organization also noted that not addressing those issues “contributes to an environment that is ripe for electoral fraud and the peremptory disenfranchisement of born Belizeans throughout the Diaspora.”

The BMP called on members of the Senate, particularly the Social Partner Senators to consider those issues when debating GOB’s proposed legislative amendments to facilitate an upcoming referendum.
