By BBN Staff: In commemoration of the International Family Equality Day (IFED), Our Circle, the new voluntary organization dedicated to the active inclusion of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) persons of Belize will be hosting an interactive two-day session designed to launch the results of the Demographic Survey of Same-Sex Couples in Belize.

The initiative will help analyze the data collected and develop an approach to initiating reform based on the data gathered. The sessions will be held on May 2nd and 3rd.

This survey was conducted from Dec 10, 2018, to March 10, 2019, and gathered demographic, household, employment and security data from over 100 LGBT persons in Belize.

“The overall goal of the “Living Outside the Safety Net Symposium” is to serve as a platform for the national community to dialogue on important issues confronting the institution of the family and the inequality which exists for Diverse and Rainbow Families in Belize, as we move forward to achieve the tenets expressed in Horizon 2030 National Framework as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” the organization explained.

The “Living Outside the Safety Net Symposium” intends to bring together key Government Representatives, Private Sector Representatives, Parliamentarians, Faith Based Representatives, Civil Society Organizations and Community Members in looking to establish a way forward.

Our Circle’s team spent the weekend conducting a Family Inclusion Working Session, reviewing and analyzing legislation which infringes on the rights of diverse families in Belize and developing an action plan to address the inequality which exists.

This session was an extension of the Universal Periodic Review submitted last year in Geneva, Switzerland, and ties into the upcoming Symposium.

On May 5, the official day of IFED, Our Circle along with other organizations celebrating diverse families globally, has planned their annual Family Fun Day.

This is Belize’s third year as an IFED member and Our Circle’s Communication and Advocacy Officer, Derricia Castillo-Salazar’s third year as IFED Co- President.

For Co-President, Castillo-Salazar (Belize), this is part of the beauty of the IFED.

“Everyone can contribute to our fight for justice and equal rights. We look forward to the event and its positive impact on rainbow families both in Belize as well as in other countries where LGBTIQ*-people do not yet enjoy the same rights as the majority of the population,” Salazar expressed.
