By BBN Staff: According to the Ministry of National Security (MNS), Belizean activist Will Maheia is a major reason why Guatemalan Armed Forces (GAF) continually harass Belizeans visiting the Sarstoon River.
The Ministry made a post on its official Facebook Page this morning, which is said to have been written by the Minister of National Security (John Saldivar), speaking on how he is concerned about Maheia’s intention as he continues to make excursions to the Sarstoon.
Saldivar contends that while Maheia has the right to venture into the Sarstoon, there is no constructive reason for him to do so because enforcing Belize’s sovereignty over the area is a job for Belize’s security forces.
“… by now the Belizean public must realize that these incidents have mostly occurred in the presence of Will Maheia. Many others have traversed the Sarstoon River unmolested by the Guatemalans,” Saldivar said. “… it must be understood that Maheia is a lightning rod for conflict with the Guatemalans because of the nature of the work that Maheia use to do in protecting the Marine Reserves in the area with TIDE.”
Saldivar went on to say that the MNS respects Maheia’s work in conservation but stressed that those works have put him in direct conflict with Guatemalan fisherfolk who live on the Sarstoon, which makes him a target for members of the GAF. He ended his post with a call for Belizeans to “choose peace” and leave the job of enforcing Belize’s sovereignty to the security forces.
