Attorney General and Business Senator agree on referendum but disagree on bill

Posted: Wednesday, April 17, 2019. 6:40 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Both Attorney General, Michael Peyrefitte, and Business Senator, Mark Lizarraga, agreed during the Senate debate that the referendum on taking the Guatemalan claim needs to be held; however, they disagreed on several issues including how quickly the referendum should be held.

Lizarraga stressed that the Government of Belize (GOB) needs to take its time to address several pertinent issues, including Belizeans at home and within the diaspora who are disenfranchised from voting due to registration issues.

” If we disenfranchise 1 UDP or 1 PUP or any citizen of this country, that is unforgivable. This needs to be addressed,” Lizarraga said.

Peyrefitte, on the other hand, feels that the referendum needs to be held as soon as possible and noted that Chief Justice, Kenneth Benjamin, did not outrightly rule that GOB made any serious errors with the writ that gave rise to the referendum.

Peryrefitte also challenged Lizarraga on the number of Belizeans reportedly being disenfranchised within Belize, stressing that Lizarraga had the numbers wrong.

“Since November 1st when vital stats came under the AG’s ministry, we have rejected and I say it with pride 692 people. Where do you get 2,500 from? And before that from when the process started, we rejected 611, so that’s about 1302. Where do you get 2,500 from?” Peyrefitte questioned.
