Belize Peace Movement stands with Will Maheia

Posted: Wednesday, April 17, 2019. 11:52 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize Peace Movement (BPM) is standing in support of activist Will Maheia and condemning the recent statement from the Ministry of National Security (MNS), which named Maheia as a major factor for Guatemalan Armed Forces (GAF) continued harassment of Belizeans at the Sarstoon River.

The BPM, an umbrella organization which includes Belize Territorial Volunteers and the Northern Territorial Volunteers as members, categorized the statement as both “disrespectful” and “unfair” to Maheia, who makes excursions to the Sarstoon on the strength of a constitutional right to free movement.

“The post by the Ministry of National Security is irresponsible, dishonest and slanderous. It is a yet another glaring example of the failure of the Belize Government to come to grips and to be truthful regarding the unlawful annexation of the Belize side of the Sarstoon, by the GAF,” the BPM said.

Yesterday, the MNS posted on its official Facebook page a statement from Minister of National Security John Saldivar, saying that Maheia was ” a lightning rod for conflict with the Guatemalans,” and suggesting that many other Belizeans have gone to the Sarstoon and did so unhindered when they traveled without Maheia.

The MNS also suggested that Maheia’s trips to the Sarstoon were based on feeding his own ego rather than for any patriotic purpose. Maheia has not yet issued any official response to the MNS.
