By BBN Staff: A Belizean couple is back home in the country after being detained in Bacalar, Mexico.

Efrain Guerrero, his wife, and 2 children were on their way back home yesterday from Bacalar when they ran over a jaguar on the road.

Mexican authorities who reported to the scene immediately detained Guerrero.

Guerrero’s wife spoke to Mexican media outlets explaining that he swerved the vehicle trying to avoid an accident with a bus coming behind him. She also said that environmental officials in Mexico arrived and tried to extort them.

Last night, the family sought assistance from the Belize Embassy in Mexico.

Guerrero was reportedly released last night and returned to Belize without any charges.
