By Aaron Humes: A brawl in the insular and normally placid village of Crooked Tree has left a teenager behind bars and another young man fighting for his life.
Ravin Gillett is charged with attempted murder and grievous harm of Elton Baiza during a fight on April 7 in the village. Baiza was there socializing when he was attacked and left for dead by a group of persons. A village resident rushed him to Belize City and the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment, where he remains in critical condition.
Gillett appeared before Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson who read the indictable charges and denied bail after it was noted by the court prosecutor that Baiza is fighting for his life and if he dies, the charges might be upgraded to murder.
Gillett in trying to explain himself admitted to kicking the downed Baiza three times but claimed that was all he did. The Magistrate quickly stopped him to avoid any further self-incrimination.
He returns to court on June 25.
