Ministry of Health fires back at PUP

By BBN Staff: Only hours after the People’s United Party (PUP) issued a statement condemning the condition of the morgue at the Southern Regional Hospital (SRH), the Ministry of Health (MOH) issued a response.

“The Ministry considers this to be of poor taste in terms of politicizing the death of an individual in search of political mileage,” the Ministry said.

The PUP release and subsequent response stem from an issue last week where the morgue at the SRH could not store the body of a woman that had died, causing extra problems for the grieving family.

The PUP criticized the Government of Belize saying that it has made poor decisions in terms of the distribution of funds with respect to the health sector and said that those choices “has led to the deterioration of Belize’s health system.

The ministry explained that the issue was one of miscommunication between the medical officer signing the death certificate and the family of the deceased. The MOH has since spoken to the family and offered whatever assistance could be rendered, but also assured the public that steps are being taken to get the morgue at the SRH up and
running as soon as possible. The morgue has been non-functioning for about a month.
