“Belize and Taiwan relations moving from strength to strength,” says Taiwanese President

Posted: Wednesday, April 24, 2019. 1:29 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) President Tsai Ing-wen, said that Belize and Taiwan are making tangible steps towards strengthening ties between the two countries ahead of the celebration of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations later this year.

President Tsai said that the two countries are strengthening cooperation in the areas of business, education, information and communication technology, infrastructure, and public health.

Currently, Belize Senate President Lee Mark Chang is leading a delegation to Taiwan, along with Minister of Natural Resources Hugo Patt, Sen. Aldo Salazar, and Michael Singh, an adviser to Prime Minister Dean Barrow on e-governance and digital transformation. The delegation is on a five-day agricultural, biotechnology and economic fact-finding trip, and will also see the establishment of the Taiwan-Belize Interparliamentary Amity Association, which will mark a new chapter for relations between the two countries.

Both countries are also looking forward to a Taiwan tourism investment mission to Belize and the first Taiwan trade fair in the country set for November.

Belize is one of Taiwan’s only remaining diplomatic allies, as more countries cut ties in favor of the People’s Republic of China. Belize has declared unwavering support for Taiwan on numerous international platforms such as meetings of the United Nations.
