By BBN Staff: A letter sent by PUP party Leader, John Briceno to his standard bearers was leaked to the media today.
In his letter, Briceno mentions that despite the legal challenge mounted by the PUP and legal process that continue to run its course through the Court system, the Prime Minister moved ahead and set May 8, as the new date for the holding of the Referendum.
Briceno explains to his standard bearers that at the sitting of the House of Representatives and the Senate, the PUP tried to list the problems faced in going to this national referendum.
“In addition to the legal issues, we still have thousands of Belizeans being kept off the voter register, there are still many loose ends with respect to the management of the referendum by the Election and Boundaries Department, the one sided nature of the education campaign has still not been addressed and issues like the repeal or replacement of the Maritime Areas Act along with those other issues set out in the People’s Declaration have not been met,” Briceno declared.
Furthermore, Briceno says that due to this and other issues with the Government, the PUP is encouraging voters to vote No on May 8, 2019.
He also says that the party should engage in a proper execution of a ‘No to the ICJ’ campaign.
“I am asking all standard bearers to activate their campaign committees and to hit the streets ensuring that PUP supporters come out in large numbers on referendum day to vote NO,” the letter states.
Briceno urged all standard bearers to activate and prepare their election day plan to result in a ‘No to ICJ’ vote.
On May 8, Belizeans will participate in a historic national referendum on whether or not to take Guatemala’s claim on Belize’s territory to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for final settlement.
