By BBN Staff: Instructors from Belize’s Youth Challenge Programme (YCP) have completed a two-week training course in the United States, which was sponsored by the Louisiana National Guard’s (LANG)Youth Challenge Program (YCP).
The training course, held at the Gillis W. Long Center in Carville, lasted from March 31 to April 13. The instructors are members of the Belize Defense Force, who received training alongside instructors from the LANG YCP.
Among the many skills honed during the workshop, instructors learned alternative disciplinary methods, enforcing discipline, and how to inspire cadets in the YCP to aspire to become productive citizens.
The LANG and the BDF have worked together for over 20 years, and have participated in over 250 events during the past few years.
Belize’s YCP is open to youths age 15-17 years, who are in good health and are willing to participate in the program. As a requirement, the youths need to have a record free of any serious criminal charge and no cases pending before the courts. The program is geared towards giving youths a chance to better themselves outside of a classroom setting.
