Early morning earthquake reported off the coast of Honduras; shaking felt in Belize

Posted: Sunday, April 28, 2019. 12:17 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck overnight in the Bay Islands of Honduras, around 1:43 this morning.

Earthquake Track records a depth of 10 kilometers and the epicenter is located some 26 miles north of Savannah Bight, Honduras. This area is 170 miles southeast of Belize City.

According to a number of local sources and some BBN readers, shaking was felt from Toledo to Corozal. However, the earthquake occurred at a time that most Belizeans were sleeping.

Online reports indicate that shaking was felt most along the Honduras coast, through all of Belize, and up to Chetumal, Mexico.

At 5.1 on the Richter scale, the earthquake is considered a moderate one. As a result, there are no reports of any major damage in Honduras, Belize or Mexico.

The Swan Islands off the coast of Honduras, are located on the edge of the Cayman Trough, and have twice been hit by a number of earthquakes in the past nine (9) years. A 7.6 magnitude quake in 2009 killed 7 people and caused damages to buildings in Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras.

In January of 2018, another overnight earthquake of 7.5 magnitude no deaths.

No tsunami warning has been issued unlike the January 2018 earthquake in this area.
