Posted: Sunday, April 28, 2019. 11:03 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Belize Hurricanes and San Pedro TigerSharks took early leads in their best-of-three semifinal series in the National Elite Basketball League (NEBL) playoffs this weekend.

The City side relied on turnovers down the stretch to keep the game close after falling behind to number one side Verdes at the San Ignacio Sacred Heart College auditorium on Friday night. Eyan Rene struck from downtown with 16 seconds left to secure the 78-76 victory.

the Hurricanes were led by Tyrie Orosco who came off the bench to tally 24 points and 8 rebounds while Devin Daly netted 21 points, 16 in the first half, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. Shannon Fowler and Eyan Rene chipped in 9 points apiece. Kris Frazier had the game high in points and rebounds for Verdes with 30 points and 15 rebounds, while Richard Troyer finished with 15 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

In the other game, the experienced island side came to the Culture Capital with the intent of shutting down the Russell “Chiste” Garcia Auditorium and accomplished just that, coming away with the 78-67 win.

Jihad Wright led all players with 23 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals, while Martevious Adams and Ashton Edwards finished with 14 points each. Francis Arana tallied 10 rebounds, 6 points, 5 dimes, and 4 steals while Keight Pollard netted 8 points. Daniel Conorque was the top scorer for Griga Dream Ballers scoring 15 points while grabbing 5 rebounds and dishing out 5 assists. Macario Augustine netted 12 points to go with 9 rebounds for the Dreamballers. Jamal Kelly and Najib Casimiro chipped in 10 points each and Delvon Henderson finished the game with 8 points and 5 rebounds.

It all means that this past weekend’s visiting sides can close things out at home this weekend, with Hurricanes hosting Verdes at the Civic on Friday, May 3, and San Pedro hosting Griga on Saturday, May 4. Tip-off time is 9:00 p.m. Game 3 if necessary will be played the following weekend.
