Prosecutors drop charge in missing person case

Posted: Monday, April 29, 2019. 2:52 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Jeremy Baptist never came home from an event on the island of Ambergris Caye six years ago and is presumed dead.

But the man suspected of involvement, Lucio Salazar, today saw the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions admit it did not have enough evidence to pursue the case at this time.

A motion of nolle prosequi was entered this morning by Crown Counsel Christelle Wilson. Salazar, represented by Senior Counsel Simeon Sampson, had previously been out on bail. The case can be resumed if sufficient evidence is ever found.

The matter was heard before Justice Marilyn Williams, which also commence the start of the April session of the Supreme Court.

Despite not feeling well that Sunday evening, Baptist and his wife agreed to attend a baby christening being held on the island for an hour, taking their young child with them.

But Baptist and Salazar got into an altercation at the event venue. Baptist reportedly took his family home and returned to the function around 10:30 p.m. His wife says he never returned.

Police followed multiple leads, including a theory he had been shot and his remains dumped at sea, but never located Baptist.

But the DPP’s office elected to instruct police to file murder charges against Salazar as he was the last person Baptist may have interacted with before his disappearance.
