Francis Fonseca calls out UDP for referendum bribery

Posted: Sunday, May 5, 2019. 3:29 pm CST.

By BBN Staff:  On Wednesday, May 8th 2019, the referendum to have Guatemala’s claim addressed in the International Court of Justice will be held.

Operatives of the ruling United Democratic Party (UDP) have organized a free raffle in each constituency on that day.

The raffle will include cash giveaways, electronic appliances, and other gifts.

The People’s United Party (PUP) Area Representative in Freetown, Francis Fonseca registered his discontent with this initiative.

“The catch is that your ticket will only be entered into the raffle after you have proven to a UDP operative that you have in fact already voted,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

He added, “This raffle is desperate, unethical and illegal and I advise Freetown voters NOT to participate in this illegality.”

He further indicated that his party will file an official complaint with the Elections and Boundaries Commission on this matter.

“The law is very clear, no form of inducement, offer or bribe can be made in order to get a person to vote in an election or in this case a referendum,” wrote Fonseca.
