“Joint efforts needed to prevent future explosions,” says Fire Department

By BBN Staff: Following a tragic explosion that claimed the life of two little girls and injured several adults, the Belize Fire Service believes that relevant authorities need to come together and review safety protocols for water taxi terminals.

“I believe it comes to a joint effort between us and the Belize Port Authority (BPA),” said
Assistant Fire Chief, Benisfor Matura. “We need to sit down and look at what policies and procedures need to be out in place for the safer running of these water Taxies.

He said that the authorities could collaborate closely to discuss issues such as vessel inspections as well as safety procedures when refueling boats. He noted that there was already an issue that arose from boat refueling at the Fort Street Tourism Village some years ago, which emphasized the need for a policy review.

The blast happened because some gasoline from a fuel leak settled into the stern of the boat causing the spark. Breaking Belize News contacted the BPA, but were told that the relevant officers are in the site conducting an investigation into the explosion. We will be updating this story as more information becomes available.
