By BBN Staff: This morning on the Love FM Morning Show, Prime Minister of Belize, Dean Barrow said that the campaign on whether or not to take Guatemala’s claim to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ought not to have been political.
Barrow explained that the discussions on taking the claim to the ICJ were a bi-partisan approach that included the UDP and PUP.
“ The decision to go the ICJ was the decision not just of one party but of the state, of the nation-state, the country of Belize. It is a pity that from that absolutely extraordinary beginning since we are never able to agree on anything, there was agreement. There was cooperation. There was a commitment by both parties to take this thing to the ICJ and to do so on the basis of unity. It is a shame that in fact things spun out of control and there is blame enough to go around,” Barrow expressed.
Barrow asked Belizeans to recollect how discussions for going to the ICJ began and stated that the objective of going to the ICJ is to obtain a legally binding resolution to the claim.
