PUP condemns Government’s referendum corruption

Posted: Monday, May 6, 2019. 4:52 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The People’s United Party (PUP) issued a statement today condemning the referendum corruption by the Government of Belize (GOB).

The PUP refers to the issuance of free raffle tickets to Belizeans in an attempt to persuade voters to vote ‘Yes’ to the ICJ.

The party says that it is appalled and outraged by the UDP government’s latest outrageous, shameless act as the nation prepares to decide YES or NO to the ICJ.

The PUP further makes a call to the Government to immediately withdraw this raffle because it is an insult to Belizeans who will be making a critical decision that will affect the country’s future.

Furthermore, the PUP brings to the attention of those in the UDP who are organizing this ‘Referendum raffle’ that they are acting illegally.

The Representation of the People’s Act clearly states that, “Every person who is guilty of bribery, treating or undue influence shall be guilty of a corrupt practice, and is liable on summary conviction thereof, to imprisonment for any term not exceeding one year, or to a fine not exceeding five hundred dollars or to both such fine and period of imprisonment.”

On May 8, all Belizeans are expected to make a decision free from inducements and bribery.

“Remember, this is not about politics, this is about the country,” the PUP states.

The PUP end their statement with this question: “What is it that we are risking by rushing to the ICJ under this incompetent and unprepared administration?”
