PUP Leader: On Wednesday, Take a stand for Belize!

Posted: Monday, May 6, 2019. 3:24 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: On Wednesday, May 8, 2019, Belizeans will go to the polls to vote whether or not to take Guatemala’s claim on Belize’s land, insular and maritime territory to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for final settlement.

Today, Leader of the Opposition, People’s United Party (PUP) issued a statement urging supporters to vote ‘No’ to the ICJ citing that Belize is not prepared for the World Court.

“ The PUP believes that this is such an important issue that every Belizean should have been provided with all the facts so that they can make an informed decision. The Government had a responsibility to ensure that Belizeans were given all the information in such a manner that it was unbiased, clear and understandable. They failed to do that,” Briceno said.

Briceno explained that the campaign done by the Government of Belize was not fair and balanced. He also noted that the Government failed to properly execute the legal procedures to ensure the smooth execution of the referendum.

“ We can’t afford to put our country at risk, no part of it, we have to vote No for our nation, no to corruption, no to incompetence, no to arrogance. On Wednesday, let us come together as one people and take a stand for Belize. The UDP government has failed to prepare us for this referendum,” Briceno asserted.
