Belizeans prepare for Decision day 2019

Posted: Tuesday, May 7, 2019. 2:31 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Officials from Belize’s Elections and Boundaries department are today making final preparations for tomorrow’s historic national referendum. Observers from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) along with officials from the British Embassy, the US Embassy, Taiwan Embassy and the Commonwealth are in Belize to observe the referendum.

Belizeans have the opportunity to vote whether or not to take Guatemala’s claim on Belize’s land, insular and maritime territory to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for final settlement.

The ICJ awareness campaign has been intense with both sides engaging Belizeans in public fairs, talk shows, information sharing and numerous advertisements.

Polls open tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m. at the 344 polling stations countrywide.

Belizeans will be asked to vote ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ to:

“Do you agree that any legal claim of Guatemala against Belize relating to land and insular territories and to any maritime areas pertaining to these territories should be submitted to the International Court of Justice for final settlement and that it determine finally the boundaries of the respective territories and areas of the Parties?”

Belizeans must mark an X beside the Yes or NO on the right side of the ballot paper to indicate their choice.

Remember to be informed and exercise your democratic right by inking those fingers on May 8.
