Posted: Wednesday, May 8, 2019. 3:52 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: As of 7 am this morning, 344 polls opened countrywide to allow Belizeans the opportunity to vote on whether or not to take Guatemala’s claim on Belize’s territory to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for final settlement.

BBN spoke to Cayo Central Area representative, Rene Montero who said that he is confident that the result will be a ‘Yes’ to the ICJ.

“ Today is History because we are voting for Belize to end the unfounded claim by Guatemala so it is different. This is for Belize. This is to save our country from the unfounded claim by Guatemala…. I feel confident that the ‘Yes’ have it. Yes for Belize,” Montero said.

In relation to voter turnout, Montero said that he thinks it will be similar to that of a general election.

For the 2015 general elections, Cayo Central had a 74% voter turnout.
