CARICOM observation mission present for today’s referendum

Posted: Wednesday, May 8, 2019. 3:46 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) informed that its Election Observation Mission (CEOM) is in Belize for today’s Referendum on whether to take the dispute arising from Guatemala’s claim to Belize’s land, insular territories, and the maritime areas pertaining to them, to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for final settlement.

The CARICOM Secretariat was invited by the Government on Belize to mount the Mission.

The Mission had been mounted to monitor the Belize Referendum, originally slated for 10 April 2019, but it was postponed after Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin granted an interim injunction sought by the Opposition People’s United Party (PUP).

Ian Browne of Barbados is leading the Mission which includes electoral officials from Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Guyana and Saint Lucia. Two members of Staff of the CARICOM Secretariat are also supporting the team.

The members of the Mission arrived in Belize on 5 May and they will depart on 10 May 2019.
