By BBN Staff: The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, to begin a week’s worth of activities in commemoration of Nurses’ Week, held a health fair yesterday in the hospital parking lot.
The fair showcased the various units of the hospital and gave attendees an opportunity to speak with the nurses from each unit to find out what it is they do and under what conditions they work. The nurses also had the various equipment they use in the commission of their duties on display.
Alice Dominguez, a nurse attached to the Operating Theater of the hospital, explained that Nurse’s Week 2019 is being celebrated under the theme “Nurses: A voice to lead, health for all.”
When asked what she wished patients and visitors to the hospital knew about nursing, Dominguez said “We are very short on staff so most of the nurses work double shifts. Instead of eight hours, they work 16 hours,” Dominguez said.
She stressed that nurse migration is a phenomenon being felt all over the world and is one of the primary reasons health systems the world over are running with fewer nurses than they should be.
There are several other events planned leading up to International Nurse’s Day, celebrated globally on May 12. As Belize’s population grows, the Inter-American Development Bank, predicts that Belize will need 2,000 additional nurses by the year 2040.
