By BBN Staff: This morning as polls opened in San Ignacio, we caught up with PUP Standard bearer of Cayo North, Michel Chebat at polling station 73, Sacred Heart Primary School.

Chebat said that a high voter turnout is expected in the Cayo North division.

When we asked Chebat what is his position on whether or not to take Guatemala’s claim on Belize’s territory to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) he told us that he is voting ‘No’.

“ This is a national issue and it’s important, we want everyone to come out…… I think my position is clear and it is well known. I am a No to the ICJ and I will forever be a No to the ICJ,” Chebat asserted.

When asked if not the ICJ, then what other option would Belizeans have if they vote no, Chebat replied by citing that there will be elections in Guatemala next month and it would mean a change in the approach of this issue.

“ Well, I keep on saying that there will be presidential elections in Guatemala next month and that opens the door for further diplomatic solutions and I think that is the way we need to go,” Chebat stated.

Chebat further said that residents in the Cayo North constituency were interested in this national issue and are coming to the polls to vote.
