Belize Peace Movement calls for unity in referendum aftermath

Posted: Thursday, May 9, 2019. 3:39 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Following the majority decision to take the Guatemalan claim to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the Belize Peace Movement (BPM) is calling for the country to unite for the legal battle that lies ahead.

The BPM a once vocal voice for the “No to the ICJ” sentiment, said that it respects the decision of the people and is thus calling on the major political parties to move beyond partisan politics and do what is best for the nation in preparing to go to court.

“As the nation moves into this new phase regarding what began as the Anglo-Guatemalan Territorial Differendum, the Belize Peace Movement urges the nation’s leadership to do away with the divisive and polarizing approach to governance…” the BPM said.

The organization also took the time to emphasize that the entire process leading up to the referendum was filled with issues that ultimately affected the outcome. That issues included thousands of disenfranchised voters within the diaspora, an education campaign which was biased towards a “Yes” position, and the fact that the special agreement which gave rise to the referendum is being challenged in court.

The movement called for the Government of Belize to implement several strategies to ensure that that the people’s best interest is looked after, including giving a comprehensive breakdown of all the funds’ spent leading up to the referendum and on the day itself.
