By BBN Staff: Members from all ten branches of the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) gathered in Corozal Town at the auditorium of the Corozal Community College on April 24 and 25 for the Annual BNTU Convention.

The educators’ 49th convention was held under the theme “BNTU: A Bold, Resolute and Resilient Beacon for Belize.

Mayor of Corozal Bay, Rigo Vellos gave the welcome address.

The keynote speaker for the opening ceremony was former National Secretary, Endevora Jorgenson.

The business of day one included presentations and acceptances of reports from members of the National Executive as well as those from the individual branches.

One of the highlights included a presentation done by personnel of the Teaching Service Commission Secretariat on Employment and Retirement procedures for teachers.

BNTU members then engaged in games such as the finals of the National football competition, which was spearheaded by the Youth Arm Committee.

BNTU congratulates members of the female team from the Belmopan Branch and the male team from the Orange Walk Branch who walked away with the first place cash prize, trophy, and medals.

Second place winners for the female competition was the Orange Walk Branch and for the males, it was the Belmopan Branch.

Day one concluded with a grand dance which featured the Sweet Pain Band.

The work of day two included the presentation and discussion of eight resolutions from the membership; five of which were passed by those present.

There was then the endorsement of three members of the National Executive, inclusive of the National President, National Secretary and National Treasurer who were not challenged for their posts.

The election was then held for the post of First Vice President which was contested by incumbent Luke Palacio of the Punta Gorda Branch and his challenger, Otilio Mufioz of the Orange Walk Branch.

Palacio walked away victorious and so retained his seat as First Vice President.

These officers will all serve in their capacities for the next two years.

In closing, members were reminded that next year the BNTU will celebrate its Golden Anniversary and, with their suggestions and full participation, it will be a year-long celebration leading up to July 20th, 2020.

In conclusion, it was offered and unanimously accepted that the union’s 50th Convention will be hosted by the Belmopan Branch.
