Prime Minister Dean Barrow outlines way forward after referendum vote

By Aaron Humes: What’s next?

That’s what we asked Prime Minister Dean Barrow this afternoon during his post-referendum press conference at the Belize Civic Center.

The first part is a good-faith effort to re-engage the Opposition People’s United Party, which has called for a return to discussing other national issues.

The Prime Minister said that it is now Belize, not the PUP or the United Democratic Party (UDP), that will be going to the ICJ, and that it must be done in unity.

That means they will be consistently consulted and advised on what is happening.

The Government will next turn it’s attention to the Maritime Areas Act, which will be amended to restore Belize’s claim to all its maritime territory.

Following approval by Cabinet, the amendments are expected in the House of Representatives in the next few weeks and are expected to have wide support according to the Prime Minister.

As for the related court cases in the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, the Prime Minister suggests that the result puts paid to what is happening there but said he needs to be further briefed.
