Prime Minister Dean Barrow: “Thank you” to Belizeans after referendum vote

Posted: Friday, May 10, 2019. 11:05 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Yesterday at a press conference following a largely unexpected result in Wednesday’s referendum, Prime Minister Dean Barrow gave thanks and called it “a decision for Belize.”

The 55 percent ‘Yes’ vote, said the P.M., is not a victory for his United Democratic Party; neither is the ‘No’ vote of 44 percent a failure for rivals, the People’s United Party and Belize Peace Movement. He assured that even if the result had gone the other way he would offer his congratulations and call for unity.

But since it is ‘yes’, he said, it is now time to plot the course forward, together, after a divisive and occasionally bitter campaign followed by a demonstration of national ability. “There can be no doubt that the result is the will of the people,” he stated.

The Prime Minister said he would extend “the hand of friendship” in a national unity outreach to the PUP and other opponents, as over the next few years there can be no slip-ups and no deviation from the path.
