By BBN Staff: A federal jury in the state of Florida, United States, has convicted a Belizean man, Rudolph Randolph Meighan, along with two Colombian men for trying to smuggle cocaine into the US.
The jury fund Meighan guilty today, for a single count of of conspiracy to distribute and to possess with the intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine while on board a vessel subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, as well as one count of possession with the intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine on that vessel. Meighan and his co-convicted are facing the maximum penalty, life in a federal prison. They will be sentenced on August 7.
A report issued by the US Justice Department, say that the men were a part of an international drug smuggling ring which involved up to 600 kilograms of cocaine, valued around US $18 million.
The trio were spotted in a boat by a US Coast Guard (USCG) aircraft some 110 nautical miles southwest of Jamaica on December 1, 2018. They reportedly tried to dispose of the cocaine by tying the drugs to their outboard engine and sinking it into the sea. USCG personnel had captured the attempt to dispose of the evidence on video, and that evidence was used against them at the trial.
