National Teacher’s Day Celebrated in Belize

Posted: Tuesday, May 14, 2019. 6:24 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: World Teacher’s Day is celebrated in October, but today, Belize is taking time out as a nation to appreciate the men and women that help mold this nation, through the observance of National Teacher’s Day.

In a recent interview, the Minister of Education, Patrick Faber, explained that the event forms a part of the greater observation of Education Month. Schools all over the country were closed today, as teachers were treated to some well-deserved rest and relaxation in the beautiful village of Hopkins, through the Belize National Teachers Union.

Data from the Statistical Institute of Belize shows that in 2018, there were over 90,000 students enrolled in the pre-school, primary and high school levels. That data also shows that there were only around 5,566 teachers between the three levels of education to serve all those students.

With high teacher/student ratios, increasing disciplinary issues and ever-increasing demands for the profession, the profession is facing one of its most challenging, but rewarding times given the potential to positively impact the lives of Belizean youths.

Breaking Belize News (BBN) takes this time to salute all teachers, at every level, and wish them a Happy National Teacher’s Day.
