By BBN Staff: The United States has condemned the deteriorating social situation in Venezuela and is calling on member countries of the United Nations (UN) to take action.
Today, the US Mission to the UN issued a statement on a Security Council Meeting on Venezuela, which notes that the government of President Nicholas Maduro has intensified efforts to jail members of the political opposition. The US mission notes that media within Venezuela are referring to the campaign as “Operation Scorched Earth” dubbed after a military policy which seeks to destroy anything useful to an enemy when withdrawing from an area.
“The United States calls on all member states to be prepared to take concrete actions in response to the Maduro regime’s repression throughout Venezuela,” the US Mission said.
The Mission also noted with great concern Maduro’s May 8th arrest of Edgar Zambrano, the First Vice President of Venezuela’s National Assembly. The US stressed that it is proud to be one of the nations that support the declaration of interim presidency Juan Guido and calls on other nations to rally behind Guido as he has called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Venezuela.
