Police address public outrage over manslaughter charge

Posted: Thursday, May 16, 2019. 1:20 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Following massive public outcry on the decision to charge  Zena Armstrong with manslaughter in respect to the stabbing death of Anna Villanueva, the Belize Police Department issued a statement that the investigation is not over.

“The Commissioner of Police assures the family and the general public that in this, and all cases, we act on the evidence and not on any familiar relationships of victims or accused persons,” the department said.

Police explained that the decision to charge for manslaughter was taken after consultation with the Director of Public Prosecutions, who did not feel that the evidence police had at the time was sufficient for a charge of murder.

“The police investigators are in the process of carrying out those directives after which the DPP will consider whether or not the charge can be upgraded to murder,” the department noted.

Armstrong stabbed Villanueva in Corozal on the night of May 12, after an altercation which witnesses say Armstrong had started.
