The World Ocean Day organization has launched a global #Together We Can campaign to highlight the importance of creating a healthy ocean.
The United Nations also launched the #Beat Plastic Pollution campaign which is a global campaign against plastic pollution.
The UN notes that due to overuse and a surge in single-use plastics has led to a global environmental catastrophe.
Annually, a record 100,000 marine animals die due to tonnes of plastic thrown into the ocean.
Pollution from single-use plastics is also a major problem in Belize.
In 2018, the Government of Belize approved the Implementation Strategy and Action Plan to Phase-out Plastics and Styrofoam, Transition to Green Products, and Promote Recycling.
The Implementation Strategy and Action Plan to Phase-out Plastics and Styrofoam, Transition to Green Products, and Promote Recycling is being carried out by the Plastics and Styrofoam Taskforce.
In April of this year, Belize commenced phasing out the use of single-use plastics.
