Belizean prisoner escapes in Guatemala

By BBN Staff: A Belizean jailed in Guatemala has escaped custody.

He is the controversial Joseph Ryan Budna, 38.

International media outlets are reporting that this prisoner was taken to a hospital in San Benito, Petén, for health reasons. However, that was when he seized the opportunity to escape.

This is not the first time he has escaped custody.

Five years ago in 2014, he escaped but was recaptured.

During Budna’s escape, he was guarded by officers of the penitentiary system. Those officers have not yet released further information.

Dario Bertruy of the National Civil Police has informed the public that operations are currently being carried out to try and recapture Budna.

In 2012 Budna was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in a Guatemalan prison for kidnapping and extortion.
