FCD promotes sustainable farming in Vaca Forest Reserve

Posted: Thursday, May 30, 2019. 6:39 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) went on a tour of farms at the Vaca Forest Reserve area in the Cayo district.

The tour was organized by the FCD in an effort to highlight best practices of farmers and sustainable farming in Belize.

Farmer Jose Melendez has been farming in the area since 1988 and since then, he has learned quite a few strategies for harvesting organic crops.

Melendez has also benefited from the Small Grants program facilitated through the ‘Friends of Vaca Forest Reserve’ and FCD.

Melendez currently has an irrigation system allowing him to have access to water for his green houses and crops.

He also uses pure cow manure to yield 100% organic fertilizer. Melendez explained the process and also told us that he uses various flowering plants as insect repellent for his crops.

In addition, Melendez sells coffee that he plants at his land.

Melendez says that his vision is to continue to re-forest the land and planting fruit and vegetable trees while using 100% organic ways to produce crops.

“ I have 32 years living here and farmer. I plant vegetables, fruits and my practices are 100% organic. I feel happy for doing this because I know that I am producing crops for the market in Belize. I depend on rains to wet my plants but through a project that came through, we built a pond and with the help, they installed the irrigation system,” Melendez said.

Melendez plans to continue to have diversity in the crops and plants that he has in his land and show other farmers in the area how to plant 100% organic crops.
