Bee-Keeping flourishing in Vaca Forest Reserve

Posted: Friday, May 31, 2019. 10:39 am CST.

By BBN Staff: During a tour hosted by Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) yesterday, we met one of the three farmers that currently doing bee-keeping in their farms.

Carlos Serrano has his farm inside of the Vaca Forest Reserve and his start-up was six bee hives provided by FCD. Serrano now has 16 bee hives.

In addition, Serrano has harvested over 7,000 pounds of watermelon and over 15,000 heads of cabbage.

Serrano is also a part of the ‘Friends of Vaca Forest Reserve’ committee comprised of farmers in the area that seek support and technical assistance from FCD.

He has benefitted from the ‘cover structures’ and the installation of irrigation systems.

Serrano told us that he made a transition from purchasing fertilizers to now using 100% organic fertilizers for all his produce.

At Serrano’s farm, he produces sweet peppers, plantains, coco and harvests honey.

A cover structure is a structure used solely for agricultural purposes in which, the use is exclusively in connection with the production, harvesting, storage, drying, or raising of agricultural commodities.
