By BBN Staff: This week, the Belize Brewing Company celebrated a major milestone, marking its 50th anniversary of operation.
In January, the company embarked on a journey through an advertising campaign to tell stories — stories of Belizeans and things that, like Belikin can only be found in Belize but never told its own story. Founded by Eric W.M. Bowen and his son Barry Bowen, the company started out against all odds after a feasibility study by an international brewing consultancy firm had determined that Belize was just not the right place to start a brewery.
With the help of the Cerveceria Hondureña Brewery, the company started out in 1969 with every piece of equipment but one, being second hand. That one new piece of equipment, a diesel boiler, would go on to explode on the same day that Berty R. Hogge from the Cerveceria Hondureña Brewery came for a site visit.
Following Belize gaining its independence, the company bought out Cerveceria Hondureña Brewery’s interest and became fully Belizean owned. In its 50 years, the company has changed the look of its flagship brew, the Belikin beer five times, and added several brews along the way including the Belikin Stout in 1971, the Lighthouse Lager in 2000,
the seasonal Chocolate and Sorrell stouts in 2011, Belikin Light in 2016 and the most recent Belikin Black and Tan in 2017.
The company has also made strategic moves in terms of acquiring the rights to brew Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, Landshark Lager, as well as becoming the official distributor for Heineken, Amstel Bright, and Red Stripe.
The company released a statement this week saying “None of this would be possible without the hard work of thousands of Belizeans over the years, or the avid support of the people of Belize.”
