Boat belonging to US nationals hits the barrier reef

Posted: Saturday, June 1, 2019. 8:01 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Two US nationals on a 40-foot boat named Shambella, ran aground on the
barrier reef on Thursday.

Members of the Belize Coast Guard say that the boat hit the reef in
the Sapodilla Caye Marine Reserve area last night and that they received a distress call around 8:30 p.m.

Coast Guard personnel deployed a vessel from Hunting Caye to rescue the occupants, who said that they were coming from Cuba in route to

Guatemala. Both occupants have been detained and personnel from the
Department of the Environment will conduct an assessment of the damages done to the reef, which will inform authorities on their next
move.

In March of this year, a sailboat ran aground on the reef in the same area.
