By Aaron Humes: After trouncing Barcelona a few weeks ago, Liverpool F.C. prevailed today over Tottenham Hotspurs with a final score of 2-0. However, this afternoon’s Champions League final in Madrid, Spain, was effectively settled 2 minutes in by a Mohamed Salah penalty in favour of Liverpool on a handball.
The Liverpool Reds frustrated Tottenham Hotspurs’ ball possession game with rock-solid defense and superb goalkeeping of Alisson. The Liverpool goalkeeper provided the presence in goal that was missed in last year’s final when Liverpool lost to Real Madrid 3-1. And when semifinal hero Divock Origi put the second goal past the Hotspurs goalkeeper in the second half, Liverpool’s victory party began as they knew the 2019 title was clearly in the making.
Tottenham pushed the game with eight attempts at goal but none of these made it past Liverpool’s formidable goalkeeper.
Liverpool’s win is their sixth Champions League title and puts a cap on years of disappointment and frustration for both the team and German manager Jurgen Klopp. For Mauricio Pochettino and Spurs it is back to the drawing board including finding signings after 18 months without one.
