Measles case in Mexico triggers alert in Belize

Posted: Sunday, June 2, 2019. 12:33 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Authorities in Belize are on high alert after an outbreak of measles in Mexico.

The Office of the Director of Health Services today shared that a case was traced to a British woman who visited the Cancun/Playa del Carmen area last Monday.

Mexican authorities have since confirmed this case and are similarly closely monitoring it.

This case in Mexico had stirred vigilance in Belize given the large number of tourist arrivals in the country.

“We need to have measures in place in Belize given the great amount of tourists that come to Belize on a daily basis and our best stance remains maintaining a high vaccination coverage and an ongoing educational process,” wrote the Office of the Director of Health Services.
