Police warn of a spike in robberies

Posted: Sunday, June 2, 2019. 9:31 am CST.

By BBN Staff: In response to a rise in the number of robberies countrywide, the Belize Police Department issued a statement of caution this morning.

Police say that the increase in robberies has been focused primarily on business establishments. Consequently, the department has asked that business owners never keep more money than is necessary in their stores, discourage loitering in front of stores, report every suspicious activity to the police, refrain from doing business beyond regular opening hours, do background checks on all prospective employees, and limit the number of persons who have knowledge of where cash in larger quantity is kept.

“We wish to inform the general public that the police is doing what we can to mitigate this situation; however, we ask that you also employ your own precautionary measures…” the department said.

In response to the rise in robberies, police will scale up its presence within the business sector, while keeping its presence in residential areas. The department will also scale up its stop and search activities, placing random checkpoints, and increase the number of intelligence-based activities where they target known criminals.

“We ask our law-abiding citizens whose routine activities maybe hinder by this to bear patience as we do our best to make your communities safer. Your Belize Police Department is committed to making your communities safer for all,” the department added.
