Ministry of Health to discuss employee safety following stabbing of nurse by mental patient

Posted: Wednesday, June 5, 2019. 12:40 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Health (MOH) says that there will need to be urgent discussions on the safety of employees at mental health clinics after a nurse was stabbed twice at a Belize City Clinic this week.

Yesterday a mental health patient stabbed Nurse Augustina Elijio, former deputy director of health services at the MOH, once to the chest and once to the abdomen, while awaiting treatment at the Port Loyola Health Center. In the aftermath of the stabbing, the ministry is scheduling post-trauma counseling sessions for the staff at the clinic, in addition to the safety discussion.

The ministry also said that it is deeply saddened by the incident, and has since been in constant contact with physicians at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital receiving regular updates on Elijio’s condition. Elijio had to undergo surgery last night and has since been listed as being in a stable condition. Meanwhile, police have detained Collin Francis, 28, for the incident.
