Foreign Minister leads delegation to 53rd SICA meeting

By BBN Staff: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred Elrington, led a delegation to Guatemala City this week to represent Belize at the 53rd summit of the Central American Integration System (SICA for its acronym in Spanish).

H.E. Alexis Rosado, Ambassador of Belize to Guatemala; Orla Kantun Coleman, Director of International Affairs (Cooperation); and Luis Verde, and Ms. Kryshanie Pott, First Secretaries at the Embassy of Belize in Guatemala accompanied Elrington on the trip.

At the summit, the chair of the meeting Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said that the countries in Central America need to take an urgent regional approach to the migration challenge. He also used the forum to again, congratulate Belize on the May 8 referendum.

“Heads of State and Government acknowledged the positive developments flowing from progress in economic integration among some member states and agreed the future focus should remain on enhanced trade facilitation and competitiveness measures,” the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs said in a statement issued today.

At the end of the summit, Guatemala handed over the Presidency Pro Tempore of SICA to El Salvador for the next six months.
