By BBN staff: The University of Belize (UB) is seeking to advance ocean research in Belize through a partnership with the National Oceanography Centre (NOC).

UB and the NOC signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at the end of May, which will see both institutions working together to develop joint training, research projects, and other technical programs.

The MOU is geared towards enabling knowledge transfer and research collaboration focused on delivering world-class marine science for the benefit of local, regional and global communities.

“Collaboration will focus on both marine technologies and expertise, as well as scientific knowledge on coastal protection, water quality, and sustainable environmental practices,” the university said.

UB also explained that it has been working with the NOC the last 18 months under the UK government-funded Commonwealth Marine Economies Programme (CMEP), which has seen extensive habitat mapping and river sampling. That project is geared towards understanding the effects that land use changes have on the ocean in coastal areas.

The organizations hope to address various marine challenges including sustainable management of marine resources and marine pollution, through a multidisciplinary study.
