COMPOL comments on case of mental health patient who died in police custody

Posted: Monday, June 10, 2019. 4:13 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, Commissioner of Police (COMPOL), Chester Williams, provided a comment on the case of mental health patient, Nestor Vasquez Jr., who died in police custody.

Vasquez was beaten badly by fellow mental health patient, Colin Francis Jr., who was also detained last week Thursday.

According to Williams, the actions of the officers at the cellblock constituted “gross negligence.”

Williams further revealed that there are protocols that govern the cell block area.

However, investigations revealed that there was a clear breach of protocol as the officers on duty placed two mental health patients in the same cell.

Those officers have since faced disciplinary charges and are on interdiction with half pay.

According to Williams, this incident has prompted the department to look at how it treats and keeps mental health patients.

He further revealed plans to design a special cell block for mental health patients to keep them from harming themselves and others.
