By BBN Staff: The Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) is a Government funded program that is dedicated to boosting socio-economic development, enhancing human resources, and promoting economic relations in a range of developing partner countries.

Taiwan’s ICDF also offers humanitarian assistance and provide aid in the event of natural disasters or an international refugee crisis.

Projects include a focus on education, health, capacity building for health professionals, information and communication technology, technical cooperation and lending and investment.

During a presentation to the digital press group exploring Taiwan’s Political and Economic Development last week, Secretary-General, Timothy T.Y Hsiang shared some ongoing projects administered by Taiwan ICDF in Belize and Honduras among others.

One of the major focus is to boost crop production by training in the agro producing sector, by cultivating talent through education and boosting vocational training.

Included in the projects implemented in Belize is the urban resilience and disaster prevention initiative to strengthen flood preparedness, motor vehicle registration, and license system and genetic improvement in sheep and goat projects.

Additionally, the TaiwanICDF scholarships are open to Belizeans every year. In 2018, there were 29 Belizeans accepted and this year, 28 Belizeans will go to Taiwan to study.

The program has funded scholarships for over 2,000 international students from around the globe.

Though Taiwan is not allowed to participate in United Nations events, the projects and mission of the Taiwan ICDF are in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Hsiang told BBN that the purpose of the cooperation projects is to demonstrate the capability of Taiwan, to work along with partner countries to achieve the sustainable development goals, and for Taiwan to be a good international citizen.
