First Belizean woman police officer graduates from FBI training program

Posted: Tuesday, June 11, 2019. 2:18 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Police Inspector Sherlet Ramclam is Belize’s first woman delegate to a training program hosted by the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Inspector Ramclam was among the 256 law enforcement officers that graduated from the program’s 276th session on Friday, June at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. The cohort consisted of law enforcement agents from 35 countries, five military organizations, and seven federal civilian organizations.

“A central goal of the National Academy is exposing students to a variety of fresh perspectives—offered up by the FBI’s instructors and their classmates—that might challenge long-held, institutional, or outdated views,” the FBI said.

The FBI added that the National Academy also brings together police from disparate agencies and countries, forming a network which has helped solve complex trans-national cases in years past, because the officers on the case were previous classmates at the National Academy.

The FBI’s official website published an article last week featuring Inspector Ramclam, telling her story of how she got involved in the program and the impact it has had on her life and her work at the Placencia formation of the Belize Police Department. It cited that one of Ramclam’s biggest takeaways from the program was an emphasis on the wellness of law enforcement personnel.

Ramclam, during a class presentation towards the end of the program, discussed a multi-disciplinary approach to wellness and the need to codify officer well-being into department policy.
