Ministry of Health working toward banning sugary drinks from schools

Posted: Tuesday, June 11, 2019. 9:17 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Health has embarked on a nationwide initiative along with the Ministry of Education to present a proposal to cabinet seeking to ban all sugary drinks from primary and secondary schools in Belize.

Around the globe, the consumption of drinks that contain a large amount of sugar is posing various health risks to the population.

It is also a major health concern in Belize since it is providing an increasing burden on the health system and with rising prevalence rates of obesity, diabetes and hypertension, it is a major cause for concern.

The Ministry of Health reminds parents that just 1 sugary drink contains more sugar than a child needs in 1 day.

Among the many other effects are tooth decay.

Sugary drinks have no nutritional value for children and the ministry is committed to encouraging parents to ‘Switch up and protect our children’.

However, all this starts from home – what are we doing to eliminate sugars from our diets at home?
