By BBN Staff: Members of the Southeastern Watershed Alliance Group and stakeholders gathered for a meeting on the state of water quality on the Southeastern Watershed of Belize.
The meeting was sponsored by the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award and included representatives from University of Belize, Steadfast Tourism and Conservation Association, Productive Organization for Women in Action, the Belize Coastal Zone Management Authority, El Pilar, Ignacia Cacho Library, the Stann Creek Fishermen Association, Reef Keeper Belize, Pro-Organic, and Solar Families Participants.
The groups joined to discuss the state of potable water supply in Belize, particularly the Southeastern watershed that includes the valley, towns and communities along the Hummingbird Highway and Dangriga.
The groups remind the public that water is life: “we need it for drinking, cooking, bathing, and all life’s purposes”.
Results of testing in multiple watersheds in Belize showed alarming results about the current state of Belize’s water quality, revealing a water quality crisis.
For this reason, the meeting was called to publicize and inform stakeholders of ongoing work on the state of water quality in Belize and share the results of testing in select communities in the region.
Serious concerns about the potable water supply were raised and highlighted.
A major outcome of the meeting was that stakeholders and concerned individuals made commitments to work together to improve water quality in the region.
The groups are appealing to the general public to join in this important effort.
The Southeastern Watershed Alliance Group is a community based organization whose mission is to develop a water quality monitoring program for the Southeastern Watershed to ensure safe, potable water for users of the resource.
