By BBN Staff: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Help for Progress is opening a new resource center in Benque Viejo del Carmen.
The center will be located on the George Price Highway.
The primary function of the resource center is to provide information about the asylum process and refugee protection to partners, the community at large, and asylum seekers.
The resource center will also be key in building a network of partners in Benque to expand access to information and services for asylum seekers.
Referrals from officials at entry points regarding persons entering Belize and seeking protection assistance will be met at the resource center.
Over recent years, Belize has been experiencing a new influx of persons seeking asylum, mainly due to the widespread violence in the northern countries of Central America.
The Western Border is a known main entry point that processes people seeking protection in Belize. Benque Viejo is one of the towns of first contact for asylum seekers.
UNHCR and Help for Progress decided to open the new center to support Belize to achieve its regional commitments by providing information and referral resources to asylum seekers arriving in Benque.
The resource center will address gaps in reception needs for asylum seekers, provide support for Belize as a host community and enhance solutions for refugees.
